When we usually think of art, the first things that come to mind are generally paintings and drawings. Occasionally, we even think of those who are musically talented such as those in the orchestra, band, and chorus. Although senior Lisa DiVirgilio does not fall into either of those categories, there is no doubt that her most recent art project shows her artistic and creative abilities and that this out of the ordinary artist will continue her projects.
DiVirgilio won a Gold Key award for her dress in the Boston Globe’s annual student art contest.
Mustang News: How did you get interested in art?
Lisa DiVirgilio: Art was something I never considered because I was never really exposed to it. I decided to take Ceramics I only for the sole purpose of fulfilling my art requirements. As I started the class I knew something good was going to come out of it. I started to realize I was particularly advanced in creating ceramic sculptures, and I wanted to challenge myself further.
MN: What was your inspiration for the project?
LD: I give all the credit to Lady Gaga. I knew I wanted to make a dress, but I wanted it out of the ordinary. I looked to Lady Gaga as inspiration because her performance costumes are far from normal. I researched her outfits and then sketched one of my own.
MN: What exactly is your project?
LD: My dress represents “the fame,” which is Lady Gaga’s first album. I defined the fame by creating a dress solely out of money to express the desired package of becoming famous. I connected fame with money since that is the main reason people want to be famous.
MN: What exactly is the dress made of?
LD: The structure of the dress is window screen layered with fabric and then I painted the fabric a silver finish. When the dress was done drying, I then started to glaze “mod podge” on money.
MN: Do you plan on doing any more projects like this in the near future?
LD: Yes I do plan on creating more dresses because that is my focus for AP art.
MN: Do you plan on pursuing art after high school?
LD: I have thought about majoring in art for quite some time, but I seem torn about it. I know that I will minor in art in college if ceramics and sculpture is offered.
MN: Are you wearing your dress to prom?
LD: Haha, I am still thinking about it. I can’t sit in the dress and I have limited movement. Maybe I will wear it as an entrance dress and then change out of it to be comfortable. I also want to add the dress’ title “I Take Credit”.
