The Mustang baseball team had not won the GBL in 13 years, and they were hoping to take home their first GBL title since 2000. Sitting at 5-1 in the league and 12-3 overall, the Mustangs needed to win their final two league games to have any shot at a GBL title. The decisive game came on Monday, May 13 at Playstead Park against Everett. If Medford lost, then Everett would outright win the GBL. The setting was almost identical to the previous matchup, which took place on April 26TH at Playstead. Everett’s home field, Glendale is undergoing renovations, so Medford once again had a home game. Medford ace John Lavoie faced off against Everett ace Zarif Pajazetovic in a rematch. In the previous matchup, Pajazetovic pitched a complete game, three hit shutout and Lavoie allowed one unearned run through seven innings of work.
Everett won this game 1-0, and in the beginning it appeared the rematch was heading in that direction. Everett jumped out to a 1-0 lead which they held until the fourth inning. Ryan Covelle scored on an RBI single to tie the game in the bottom of the fourth, but Everett quickly added two in an error filled fifth inning. With the score at 3-1 and Pajazetovic on the mound, there appeared to be little hope for the Mustangs. With two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning, Medford started a bit of a rally thanks to hits by Jake Porrazzo and John Lavoie. With runners on second and third, Sophomore Mike Egitto ripped a ball between short and third, scoring both Lavoie and Porrazzo. The game was once again deadlocked, now at 3-3. Pajazetovic began to tire out, walking the next two batters on just nine pitches. Still with two out and now bases loaded, Sophomore Dom Ramasci stepped up to the plate. Ramasci slapped a bases clearing three run triple to right, giving Medford a 6-3 lead heading into the top of the seventh. Lavoie remained on the mound for the seventh, but Everett was able to score a quick run making the score 6-4. Everett had runners on second and third with two outs, but Lavoie struck out the final batter to win the game, 6-4.
Medford then faced off against Malden, which would give them at least a share of the GBL title. This game took place on Thursday, May 16TH, and junior pitcher Ryan Covelle took the mound against the Golden Tornadoes. Medford had defeated Malden 5-2 in the previous matchup, and with everything on the line this game meant a lot more. Covelle pitched a complete game, striking out 13 batters giving Medford a 3-1 victory. The Mustangs then defeated Matignon on Saturday, by a final score of 13-5. The Mustangs await the result of the Everett-Cambridge game, which will take place this week. If Everett loses, then the Mustangs will outright win the GBL. If Everett wins, then the teams will share the GBL. Everett defeated Cambridge 4-3 in their previous matchup, so this makes for a very interesting game.
