Movie Review: Captain Phillips

By: Clare Doncaster

The story of Captain Phillip’s is truly an amazing one. This new movie was a wonderful depiction based on the heart-wrenching true story of the high jacking of an American freight ship crossing the pirate-ridden section off the Somalian coast. Directed by Paul Greengrass, Captain Phillips was beautifully written and acted. Tom Hanks as Captain Phillips was a perfect fit, showing the heroism of the Captain while also showing the family man side of the character. As Captain Phillips take his freight ship on its journey, they are met by two small fishing boats who turn out to be much more of a threat than they seem. Phillips does everything in his power to stop the pirate from boarding his vessel, but is not able to.

The four pirates raid the ship, capturing the wheel house and the Captain along with three other crew members. Phillips bravely is able to hide the other 19 crew members from the pirates and eventually, the crew is able to capture the leader of the pirates. The crew forces the pirates off of their vessel, but they take the Captain as hostage.  I would recommend this movie to anyone interested in a high-energy film, with a lasting impact.
