An electric atmosphere at the John A. Ryan Rink in Watertown propelled the Medford Boys Varsity hockey team to a 4-2 opening round win against Acton-Boxborough in the opening round of the MIAA Division 1 state tournament.
Senior Ross Watson opened up the scoring in the first, giving the Mustangs the lead heading into the first intermission. Acton-Boxborough battled back in the second, scoring two straight goals to take a 2-1 lead. It stayed that way until junior Nick Ulanday netted the equalizer with two and a half minutes left to go in the period. This gave Medford the momentum heading into the third. The game was a stalemate for the first 15 minutes of the third. Senior Paul Zizzo (#4) put a rebound home and ultimately gave the Mustangs the win. Fellow senior Sean Allen tacked another goal on only a minute later.
The Mustangs will face third seed Wilmington, who defeated Matignon 3-2. The game is Saturday at the Chelmsford Forum, 5:40 puck drop. Bring everyone you’ve ever met in your whole life…and wear blue.
