The SpongeBob Musical, hits Broadway later this year. The stage musical premiered in Chicago in 2016, opens at the Palace Theater in December. The show, as the first big Broadway bet for Nickelodeon, will bring with it the work of a collection of well-known music artists. Artists included are Steven Tyler and Joe Perry (Aerosmith), John Legend, Sara Bareilles, Panic! at the Disco, T.I., The Flaming Lips, Lady Antebellum, Cyndi Lauper, and They Might Be Giants.
The show’s storyline, written by stage writer Kyle Jarrow, centers on a volcano that threatens the town of Bikini Bottom and its inhabitants. The lead players from the Chicago cast will remain intact for Broadway.
Ethan Slater, the Chicago Spongebob actor, reprises the title role of Spongebob Squarepants. He leads an ensemble that includes Gavin Lee (“Mary Poppins”) as Squidward Tentacles, Lilli Cooper (“Spring Awakening”) as Sandy Cheeks, and Danny Skinner, who is making his Broadway debut as best friend Patrick Star. Tina Landau heads a creative team of Broadway regulars that includes music supervisor and orchestrator Tom Kitt (Next to Normal) and choreographer Christopher Gattelli (Newsies, The Musical).
